The Good Consumer


    As a citizen of the United States of America, I believe it is safe to say that we all, at least for the most part, are living a life of high consumption. We are always seeking after "the next big thing", as if something of monetary value could actually fulfill us. It's almost scary to think of how much we really consume! In fact, a video called "The Good Consumer" plays off of this concept and brilliantly characterizes how our society has become so reliant upon the art of consumption.


    In the video, the narrator makes three main points. He says that all "good consumers" must remember to: "follow fashion", "trust in brands", and "consume for happiness". Each of these things really hit me hard. I, myself, have certainly been hypnotized by the notion of "trusting in brands" and have tried hard to "follow fashion", though not to the extent of some of my peers. In fact, there was a time in my life (around middle school) where I wouldn't wear anything that wasn't manufactured by either Aeropostale, Hollister, or Abercrombie. Isn't that sad? I have also been guilty of "consuming for happiness", such as when I bought my ipod-touch in 9th grade. I thought that buying it would make me happy. I mean, I could finally IM my friends, play all sorts of games, and have YouTube at the tips of my fingers! But, just like with everything else in life, I quickly got bored and started dreaming about my next big purchase.

    The art of consumption can be deceiving. It promises happiness and acceptance, while it does just the opposite. Instead of quenching our desires, consuming only fans the flame. The more we have, the more we want. Enough is never enough. In a society where consumption is openly accepted, and even condoned, breaking the chains of consumerism can be hard. Though we cannot always control the actions of others, we can determine our own. The only way to break such bondage is to start with ourselves.
